Saturday 25th March 2017 – Demonstration of Palette Knife Painting in Oils

Members had an enjoyable afternoon watching Frank Collict demonstrating palette knife painting in oils.  He recommended a limited range of colours and worked on a board prepared with household emulsion.   Winsor and Newton ‘Winton’ range of oil paints was used (Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Burnt Umber and Titanium White).  The image was sketched out beforehand with a thin wash of ultramarine blue before applying the oil paint with a knife, starting with the sky.  Time spent on mixing paint on the palette was recommended.  A quick and loose application of paint built up the image with remarkable ease and members were encouraged to ask questions throughout the demonstration.  During the tea break members were able to view examples of Frank Collict’s watercolours and oils and purchase cards.
