Summer Exhibition at Gallery 4, Salisbury Library 1st – 31st August 2019

Hand in: Thursday 1st August at Salisbury Library

  • Surnames A to L  10.00am – 11.00am
  • Surnames M TO  Z  11.00am – 12.00pm
  • Judging: Thursday 1st August (12.30pm to 2pm)
  • Hanging:  Thursday 1st pm and Friday 2nd August, all day
  • Meet the Artists:  Saturday 3rd August (12pm to 3pm)
  • Collection of unselected work:  Friday 2nd August (10am to 5pm)
  • Hand back:  Monday 2nd September (10am to 12pm)

SUBMISSION OF WORK:

  • Up to THREE pieces of work, all of which should be ‘For Sale’.  Minimum price £50.
  • Submissions can be a painting, drawing, mixed media or relief, intaglio, mono and screen prints, sculpture, textile, ceramic or any other form of art appropriately presented.  Maximum size is 80cms x 80cms.
  • This is a selected and curated exhibition.  With limited wall space we may not be able to hang all entries.  The final decision on entries displayed rests with the Exhibitions Team following the judging.

Browser works:  Up to SIX items on paper, Giclee prints and prints produced from computers can be submitted.  Minimum price £20.  These submissions are not subject to judging nor eligible for a commendation prize.

Fees:

  • £5 for each hanging or other art form entry.
  • Members who have submitted work for hanging will not be charged for browser submissions.
  • Members only submitting browser works will be charged £5 covering up to six items.
  • 20% commission for the SGA will be charged on any work sold.
  • The fee for hanging and other art form work will not be refunded if an item is not selected.  This is normal practice for art exhibition submissions.

Hanging requirements:

  • Framed work and canvases must be ready for hanging.  D-rings with taut cord approximately one third from the top of the frame must be used for hanging.  Screw  eyes or any other system of hanging which may damage other frames when stacked are not acceptable.
  • Remember that the mount and frame are just as much part of the art work as the picture and may well influence the judges and a potential buyer’s decision.  If in doubt seek professional advice.

Labelling:

  • Each item for hanging must have TWO clearly legible labels.
  • One:  An adhesive label on the back with the artist’s name, title of picture, medium and price.
  • Two:  A label with the same information as above, tied to a hanging cord so that the label can hang over the front of the picture for cataloguing purposes.
  • It would be helpful to send in the label information requested in advance to ease the listing and label preparation process at hand in.  Please send details by email to Barbara Martin: martisandb55@hotmail.com, ie, just Artist’s name, title of work, media, price. (Not a copy of the hand in form).

Browser work must:

  • Be wrapped in a strong, clear plastic film, sealed at the back.
  • Be signed by the artist.
  • Have an adhesive label on the front top right-hand corner of each item showing the artist’s name, picture title, medium and price.
  • Have an additional label approximately 60 x 40 mms  on the top left-hand corner stating:

‘THIS IS AN ARTIST’S GICLEE PRINT/COMPUTER IMAGE’

  • This artist’s endorsement is extremely important.  The buyer must be absolutely clear they are not buying ‘original work’.  Any misrepresentation could expose the artist to wrongful accusations leading to action by the buyer.
  • Browsers will be put in the storeroom overnight for security.

Note covering all work:

Work that does not meet all of the above criteria will not be accepted.  The most common reasons for rejection are poorly cut mounts, tatty frames and failure to follow instructions!  Decisions by the Exhibitions Team are final.

HANDING IN:

  • Surnames A to L between 10.00am and 11.00am
  • Surnames M to Z between 11.00am and 12.00pm
  • If  you are unable to hand in on the designated dates, depending on the circumstances, an alternative arrangement may be made by contacting Paul Ryder – email: paulryder164@gmail.com, tel: 01722 504907
  • At hand in, members are requested to:
  • Un-wrap their work for presentation to the Exhibitions Team
  • Hand in their entry form and appropriate fee (cash or cheque made payable to SGA)
  • Take their receipt for the work handed in (download receipt form here).
  • Take away all wrapping
  • Book in for stewarding

Photography of Work:

  • The Exhibitions Team may like to take photographs of artwork submitted for potential publicity use.  This will only happen with the consent of the artist submitting the work.  Please let the Exhibitions Team know at hand in if you don’t want photographs taken

Note:

The Exhibitions Team, the stewards and the Salisbury Library staff will take every reasonable care of the items submitted for exhibition.  They do not accept liability for any damage or loss.  The SGA buys SAA cover to protect from third party claims, e.g. for injuries caused by any accident in the gallery caused by the SGA or its members.  Artists are therefore advised to make their own arrangements to insure their work.

Judging: (Thursday 1st August 12.30pm to 2pm)

  • The Exhibition is judged by an external judge, this year by Lindsey Cole who will select work for display together with the winner for the Edwin Young Trophy for the ‘Best work in show’ £100 prize.  She will also select 2nd and 3rd places as well as Certificates for ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘Commended’.
  • Lindsey is a highly respected Hampshire based artist, a Professional Associate for the Society of All Artists, and produces a wide range of work using watercolour, oil, acrylic and mixed media.  She also teaches art through regular workshops.
  • Members can attend the judging but must not approach the judge or question decisions.
  • The Exhibition Team will inform members of the judge’s awards.  Members receiving them are strongly urged to attend the ‘Meet the Artists’ afternoon where awards will be presented.
  • People’s Vote:  The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite work during the exhibition.  The winner will be announced after the exhibition.  Noble Art, Salisbury has generously provided prizes for the winner and 2nd and 3rd places. PR coverage will be sought for any award-winning work.

Collection of unselected work:  (Friday 2nd August)

  • Members will be advised immediately after the judging if their work has not been selected.
  • Items not selected can be collected at any time during the hanging session, 10am to 5pm.

Meet the Artists: (Saturday 3rd August)

  • SGA will host a ‘Meet the Artist’ social event in Gallery Four on Saturday 3rd August between 12pm and 3pm.  Members are urged to attend to both socialise and view the exhibition.  The prize-winning awards will be announced and publicity sought from local media.

Stewarding:

Stewarding is an obligation that members accept in return for the opportunity to exhibit their work.  This provides an extra level of security over and above that provided by the library.

Stewards:

  1. Are the focus for visitors’ queries.
  2. Attend to sales of work
  3. Deal with membership enquiries
  • Stewarding sessions are divided into morning (10am to 1pm) and afternoon (1pm to 4pm) sessions, giving some 46 slots to be filled.  Entrants will be asked to do two sessions, normally in pairs, and sign up at hand in.  If this is not possible, members should try and identify an alternative suitable person to take their stewarding slots.  Members who are not exhibiting are also welcome to steward.
  • Members can email Annie George at: annie.george@sky.com to coordinate dates and times before handing in if they want to book stewarding slots in advance.
  • If any member would like to discuss or receive guidance on the role of being a steward please contact Annie George or Paul Ryder.

Working Artists:

  • We would like to have a number of working artists in the gallery during the exhibition.  If this is something you are interested in please contact Loraine Sherlock to coordinate dates and timing.

Hand Back:  (Monday 2nd September 10 to 2pm)

Unsold work will be handed back to the artist on production of the receipt given at the handing in session.  Members may delegate this task.

Artist Profile

Should you wish to take advantage of adding your ‘Artist Profile’ to a folder that will be available to visitors please at ‘handing in’ give us an A4 sheet containing your profile details.  This is often a terrific way of telling a prospective buyer of your background – and could clinch a sale!

With the ‘Arty Selfies’ initiative taking place over the Exhibition period don’t forget an opportunity will be there perhaps to exhibit a portrait.  Portraits have sold in the past but more recently we do not appear to have had many.
